Give the gift of life…

Untitled-1

Finding the perfect gift to give for Valentine’s Day can sometimes be challenging, but giving the gift of life is easy!  This Valentine’s Day and during the entire month of February, why not give blood through the American Red Cross in honor of your special someone.  Or better yet, give blood with your special someone!

During chemotherapy, a patient’s counts can become too low and often they need to pay a visit to the infusion room to receive blood.  Sam has received blood a few times during the course of his treatment and I have been so thankful that someone had taken the time to donate blood.  This truly is the gift of life.  Now is our chance to give back.

Simply call 1-800-448-3543 or visit givebloodgivelife.org to find a donation site in your area, make an appointment or for more information.  For those of you in Indiana, visit www.indianablood.org to find a donation site near you.  And for those of you in Fishers, did you know that we have a donation site right here in the Marsh plaza at the corner of 116th Street and Allisonville?  It’s true!  Here is their address and hours of operation information:

Indiana Blood Center

7458 E. Fishers Station Avenue

317-576-9680

Hours of Operation:

Monday-Thursday:  10am to 7pm

Friday:  7am to 4pm

Saturday:  8am to 12pm

Giving blood is simple.  Simply eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids before you donate.  (Well, this will be easy!)  You’ll go in, be asked some questions about your health, they’ll take your blood pressure, temperature and pulse and then take a small blood sample to make sure you are not anemic.  Then, when they give you the green light to donate, they will have you sit in a comfy chair to give your gift of life and the entire process will only last about 30 minutes.  A small investment with a big payoff!  And if you don’t want to go by yourself, get a big group of friends to go with you and make a morning of it.  That’s what I plan to do!  Do breakfast, give blood, feel good about the gift you are giving.  Or call me!  I’d love to go with you and hold your hand while you are donating!  Come on!  You can do it!  I can’t wait to hear about your experience!

Until Next Time,

Erica:)

Hi Erica – so happy I saw you this week – in Target of course! I have been reading this beautiful blog for over one hour now. Your family has been through so much, and I am praying that the days ahead are better for all of you. “For to His angels He has given command about you, that they guard you in all your ways.” Psalm 91:11 I am praying! xo!

I often think of you and your family. How Sam is doing … how you are doing. Thank you for having the courage to share such a challenging, emotional time in your life with all of us. Thank you for being a source of hope and encouragement with your strength and faith as we face “destination changes” in our own lives. God bless you and your amazing family. ~ Heather, Mike, Gavin, Garrett and Baby #3 in May.

Thanks for the push, as it was well worth it! From someone who is petrified of needles…it was nothing!! It SO helped having a great group of friends to donate with :)

Yay, Erica! Great post! I am on a break from blood donation (until this baby comes!), but we are hoping to donate cord blood. It is amazing how much good can come from such a simple act.

Erica-

Thanks for your encouragement on donating blood. I will definitely give blood this month….and try to get back into the habit of doing it regularly. I just want to encourage others that it really is not a big deal and has SUCH amazing blessings for those who need it!

Thinking of you!
Heather

Great POST!!! I just donated blood a week ago FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME and it was a GREAT experience. I have to admit I was very nervous because I do not like needles…BUT it was virtually painless and only took 6.5 minutes to donate! I also asked them to hide the collection bag b/c I didn’t want to see it. This blood is TRULY a lifesaver, not only do young cancer patients frequently receive blood but people who suffer from acute or tramatic injuries among other illnesses are also dependent upon the ARC donations. It’s free and you really are helping to save a life. What are you waiting for??!!!
