Thankful.

Yes, we’ve had a few unpleasant surprises this year, but we still have much in which to be thankful.  But it hasn’t been a bummer all year and I choose to shine my spotlight on the highlights, not the lowlights.  And most of those things I have found myself thankful for are the simple things…smiles, hugs, laughter and most importantly, time & togetherness.  The last few months I have done my best to drink in those small, everyday things that we often take for granted.  I’ve stopped to really absorb the moment and I’ve tried my best to stop multi-tasking!  Ever heard of such a thing?  In our busy world, we are often doing so many things at the same time such as unloading the dishwasher while watching Oprah, while trying to help our kids with homework, while also cooking dinner (a dinner which sometimes included throwing in a few frozen chicken nuggets since we didn’t have time to make a real dinner due to after school activities-ever been there?)  Or, driving in our car with the kids while on our cell phone making appointments or talking to a friend.  The list could go on and on.  And I’ve done them.  Frequently.  Because I always wanted to maximize my time since there never seemed to be enough hours in the day to complete all of the tasks at hand.  But those things will be there tomorrow and believe it or not, can wait.  Gasp!  I never thought I’d say that.  I’ve learned that I get more happiness from doing a craft with my family than having a clean house.  (Although it’s still pretty darn clean, thank you very much!)  I’ve participated in some pretty silly conversations and some really bad “car karaoke” while riding in the car with my boys-some of which I would’ve missed had I been on the phone.  And I’ve gotten quite a bit of satisfaction from preparing some healthy and delicious meals (although they may have a different opinion!) and sitting down as a family for dinner.  Focused.  That is what I’d call it.  Completely focused on my children-enjoying the moment.  And these small, everyday moments are the one’s I am most thankful for.

Sam’s “Thankful Tree.”  Looks like he’s thankful for a few simple things too.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving spent with friends and family, food and laughter. That’s what it’s all about after all.

As we enter into one of the busiest seasons of the year, I am going to do my best to remain focused on the simple things and not get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season.  And even though I’m sure I will be tempted with some multi-tasking…I’m going to do my best to avoid it and savor the moment.  Wish me luck!

Until next time,

Erica:)

Just got caught up on how things are going for Sam and your family. I think of and pray for you ofte!!! If well wishes, prayers and positive thoughts could bring Sam to health today I know he would be there this instant with the love and support you have been shown! I, too, like Bratty Erica. She may have to come out again in the coming months you know? My family has a name for that side of me too, Bratty Patty! It rhymes so it is a no-brainer, only she comes out more often than Bratty Erica, I’m sure! No need for a moment of remorse that she came to visit ~ I think you can offer yourself that grace :) Afterall you are Sam’s mom, his advocate. I just want you to know I am thanking God today for Sam’s future health! It’s coming!
